VINCENNES — History enthusiasts and outdoor lovers are invited to step back in time on Saturday, March 14th in honor of the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the United States.
The event, organized in partnership with the Bedford Hiking Club, offers a non-competitive way to explore Indiana’s oldest city while commemorating the nation’s “Semiquincentennial” milestone.
The walk begins at the Indiana State Historic Sites, located behind the Visitor Center at 1 Harrison Street in Vincennes. Participants can check in anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. to begin their journey.
Walkers can choose from two distinct, scenic routes:
- 11-Kilometer (6.8-mile) Route: A comprehensive tour of the city’s major historical landmarks.
- 5-Kilometer (3.2-mile) Route: A shorter, family-friendly option focusing on the downtown historic core.
The trails are designed to highlight Vincennes’ pivotal role in American history, passing sites connected to George Rogers Clark’s winter march and Abraham Lincoln’s early years in the region.
Organizers suggest that participants wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water.
The cost is $4 for adults; children and non-credit walkers are welcome.Dogs are allowed but must remain on a leash. Please note that while the outdoor trails are pet-friendly, some indoor historic stops may not allow animal.
This is a “Volkswalk,” a German-style fitness walk where participants move at their own pace rather than racing against a clock.
Vincennes serves as a focal point for Indiana’s 250th-anniversary celebrations, which will continue throughout 2026. The city was the site of the 1779 Battle of Fort Sackville, a victory that secured the Northwest Territory for the fledgling United States.
“This walk is a fantastic way to engage with the actual ground where history happened,” says Teena Ligman, event coordinator for the Bedford Hiking Club.
