BEDFORD – Residents looking to build practical job skills and explore career pathways in the trades have a new opportunity this January through the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council’s Introduction to Local Jobs and Skills (ILJAS) Program. The free program runs January 5 through January 22, 2026, and will be held at the North Lawrence Career Center.
The ILJAS program is designed to introduce participants to in-demand local careers while providing valuable, industry-recognized certifications. Over the three-week course, participants will receive hands-on exposure to welding, machining, or construction, along with safety-focused training that employers value.

In addition to trade exploration, participants will earn CPR, AED, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed certifications, giving them a strong foundation for entering the workforce. Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., making the program accessible for individuals balancing other responsibilities.
Participants must have reliable transportation and be able to arrive on time for each session. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion. Water will be provided during class sessions, and participants are welcome to bring their own snacks.
The program is sponsored by Duke Energy and is offered at no cost to participants. Those interested in enrolling or learning more are encouraged to contact Cathy Bullington at 812-797-3559 to sign up or request additional information.
