Free Purdue Extension walking program encourages healthier habits in the new year

PAOLI — Residents looking to improve their health in the new year without a major time commitment are invited to take part in a free, email-based walking program offered by Purdue Extension Orange County.

The program begins Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, and is designed for individuals who want to become more active but may struggle with time or motivation. Participants receive a total of 16 emails — two per week during the first month and one per week for the following eight weeks — providing encouragement, walking tips, and simple strategies to stay consistent.

Organizers say the program focuses on small, achievable steps that can lead to lasting health benefits. Regular walking has been shown to help reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, while also boosting energy levels and supporting overall physical and mental well-being. The program also emphasizes the social and motivational benefits of staying active.

Registration is free and must be completed by Friday, Jan. 9. Interested participants can sign up online at https://forms.gle/A4H3htWFzZyud2zv7 or by scanning the QR code included on the program flyer.

For additional information or assistance with registration, residents may contact Purdue Extension–Orange County at 812-723-7107 or email vportill@purdue.edu.
