Santa Claus, Indiana, unveils 2025 Holiday Postmark Design

SANTA CLAUS — The Santa Claus, Indiana, Post Office has officially selected its special 2025 picture postmark for the upcoming holiday season. Beginning Monday, December 1, the post office will once again offer the celebrated cancellation mark to stamp holiday mail.

The famous holiday postmark is a long-standing tradition in the town, which is the only one in the world with the name Santa Claus. Since 1983, the annual design has been created by a local high school art student as part of a yearly contest.

This year’s winning design is by Christopher Scherer of Mariah Hill, Indiana. Christopher, who is the son of Ashley Begle and Josh Scherer, is a graduate of Heritage Hills High School and currently works at Schum Monuments.

Postmaster Joshua Graham called the postmark an “endearing tradition” that “contributes to the charm of the spirit each season.”

How to Get the Special Cancellation

The Santa Claus Post Office is one of the busiest in the world during December, receiving over 400,000 pieces of mail, compared to only 13,000 pieces per month for the rest of the year.

The special picture postmark will be available on working days between December 1 and 24.

Patrons from around the world can get the cancellation by following these guidelines:

  1. Allow space: Leave at least a 2″ x 4″ space in the top right corner of your envelope for the picture postmark.
  2. Apply postage: All mail must have the appropriate postage stamps already applied.
  3. Mail Inquiries: To mail your Christmas cards for cancellation, package them in a sturdy envelope or box (with postage applied) and send to: Postmaster, P.O. Box 9998, Santa Claus, IN 47579-9998

Postmaster Graham reminds residents and visitors that the special cancellation must be requested. There is no charge for the postmarking service; however, please note that there is a limit of 50 hand cancellations per person per day. To ensure a clear postmark, avoid including bulky items like glitter or stickers in your holiday mail.
