OOLITIC — For more than six decades, Oolitic Biddy Ball has been shaping young athletes and strengthening the Lawrence County community through the game of basketball. Founded in the 1950s by Kenny Tyree and Jerry Lewis, the program began in the old Oolitic High School gym with one simple vision: give kids a safe place to play basketball and fall in love with the game. This fall, the beloved program is preparing for another season, with registration opening October 1 and running through October 31.
Today, Oolitic Biddy Ball is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving children in kindergarten through eighth grade from across Lawrence County and surrounding communities. The league is more than just basketball — it’s a place where kids learn teamwork, discipline, leadership, and sportsmanship in a safe and supportive environment. Whether a player is just picking up a ball for the first time or already has years of experience, the program offers structure, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.

The program is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through eighth grade, and no prior experience is required. Biddy Ball emphasizes fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense, while also giving players a chance to compete in a supportive environment. Practices begin in November, with games tipping off in December and continuing through February. All games will be played on Saturdays, while practices may be scheduled on weekdays or Sunday afternoons.
This year, all practices and games will be held at the Dollens Elementary School Gymnasium. The cost to participate is $37.31 per player, which includes a team T-shirt. Families are encouraged to register early to secure their child’s spot, as space is limited. Registration can be completed online at www.ooliticbiddyball.org.
In addition to players, Oolitic Biddy Ball is also seeking referees, as well as scorebook and scoreboard operators, to help make game days run smoothly. These are paid positions and will be limited to Saturdays during the season. No previous experience is necessary for the scorebook or scoreboard roles, as training will be provided.
The league prides itself on being affordable and accessible. Registration costs are kept low so that no child is left on the sidelines, and financial support is available for families in need. Kids are grouped by grade and skill level to ensure balanced play and plenty of opportunities to learn. Coaches focus on fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense, while also instilling values of respect and responsibility. Parents, grandparents, and volunteers form the backbone of the league, serving as coaches, referees, and supporters who make each Saturday in Oolitic feel like family time.
Oolitic Biddy Ball’s history is rich with community leaders who carried the torch. After decades of leadership, Tyree and Lewis entrusted the program to Mike Gilbert in 1985. Gilbert’s love for the Oolitic Bearcats and passion for youth basketball left a lasting mark on the league. In 2015, Barry Miller stepped into leadership after years of coaching and refereeing. Today, Miller continues the mission of keeping the program affordable, inclusive, and true to its roots while welcoming new families each season.
Generations of Lawrence County families have grown up with Oolitic Biddy Ball, and its impact continues to be felt far beyond the court. As another season approaches, the league remains committed to giving every child the chance to play, grow, and belong.
