BEDFORD — A record-setting crowd of vehicles and spectators filled the lot at Hobson Ford on Saturday as the Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services hosted its 24th annual Car, Bike, Truck and Tractor Show.

A total of 223 vehicles were officially registered for judging, with more than 40 others on display but not entered in competition. That brought the day’s total to nearly 275 vehicles for spectators to enjoy. Organizers said the show raised more than $32,000, surpassing last year’s record and providing a significant boost for the nonprofit group’s mission of helping county residents undergoing cancer treatment.
“Lawrence County is a group of people who just look out for each other,” said Steve Warren, with Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services. “Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services is a really special group.”

The day included more than cars and trophies. At noon, more than 40 local veterans gathered for a flag-raising ceremony featuring the Vietnam Veterans Group and the American Legion. Joanna Hackney performed the national anthem, and Chris Atchison played taps on the bugle as the flag was lifted.
“We really appreciate them doing that,” Warren said. “It was a beautiful day, and a wonderful show. We can’t do these things without the support of the Lawrence County community.”

Planning for the annual fundraiser begins each March, with monthly meetings to coordinate prizes, line up vendors, and encourage participation from organizations and car clubs. That preparation, Warren noted, is matched each year by the generosity of attendees. After this year’s show wrapped up, he said, one person quietly handed him five $100 bills and told him to “add it to the pot.”

The event featured vehicle judging, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes, and food vendors. Prizes included a gift card to St. Elmo’s Steak House in Indianapolis, a body panel from one of local NASCAR driver Chase Briscoe’s race cars, and much more. Awards were handed out in the afternoon, including class trophies, a people’s choice award, and a club participation prize.

Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services is an all-volunteer organization that provides short-term financial assistance and other aid, such as wigs, nutritional supplements, and transportation, to local patients. The group receives no government funding, relying entirely on donations, grants, and community events like the annual car show.
