Each year on the first Monday in September, Americans mark Labor Day, a federal holiday honoring the contributions of the nation’s workforce.
The holiday traces its roots to the late 19th century, when workers faced long hours, low pay, and unsafe conditions. On Sept. 5, 1882, New York City’s Central Labor Union organized the first Labor Day parade, drawing thousands who marched from City Hall to Union Square in support of better treatment.
As labor unions gained momentum, states began adopting the holiday. By 1894, 23 states had recognized it. That same year, following the violent Pullman Strike that disrupted rail traffic nationwide, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making Labor Day a national holiday.
Today, the holiday is often seen as the unofficial end of summer, marked by barbecues, parades, and retail sales. But its original purpose remains: to honor the collective strength of American workers. The U.S. Department of Labor calls it “a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
