INDOT installs speed feedback signs to enhance community safety

BEDFORD – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has begun installing new “Speed Feedback Signs” across its southwest district, including a recent placement at Heltonville Road and 16th Street in Bedford. These fluorescent signs are designed to visually alert motorists to their current speed as they enter areas with slower speed limits, primarily within town and city boundaries.

The initiative aims to increase safety, particularly where state roads transition into residential zones. INDOT officials state that giving drivers immediate visual feedback of their speed has been shown to encourage motorists to reduce their pace when entering communities.

“These signs are an effort to help increase safety, especially when these state roads are in a residential area,” an INDOT spokesperson said.

It is important to note that these signs are solely for driver awareness and feedback. They are not equipped for ticketing or any other law enforcement purposes. Their function is strictly to provide motorists with their current speed in hopes of promoting slower, safer driving habits.
