MITCHELL — On Saturday, June 28, the Marion Township Rural Fire Department opened its doors to the community for a highly attended and informative Open House, held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The event kicked off with opening remarks at 1:30 p.m., welcoming residents and setting the stage for a packed afternoon of demonstrations, activities, and community engagement. The fire department’s team was on hand to answer questions, give tours, and provide valuable safety information to attendees of all ages.
One of the event’s key highlights was the live Extrication Demonstration at 2:00 p.m., where firefighters performed a simulated vehicle rescue to demonstrate the critical skills and tools used in real-life emergency situations.

“This year alone within our three townships of Marion, Spice Valley, and Bono, we are probably at an estimated 70 to 80 fires fought right now, and we are just halfway through the year.” stated Fire Chief Dane Fountain.
Food and beverages were available for purchase throughout the afternoon, with sales benefiting the Mitchell High School Dance Team, Mitchell High School Cheer, and the Marion Township Rural Fire Department. Community support was strong, and the booths stayed busy as guests enjoyed local favorites and contributed to a good cause.
The Open House also included a series of raffles and giveaways, with a 50/50 raffle and a prize raffle drawing held at 3:45 p.m., adding excitement to the day and giving guests the chance to take home fun rewards.
“We are truly blessed to have this new facility compared to what we came out of. I know a lot of people may or may not know what we came out of, so this is definitely a huge improvement from where we were just a year ago.” added Fountain.
The fire department thanked all who attended and supported the event, especially the local student groups and volunteers who contributed their time and energy. Saturday’s event was a clear reminder of the value of collaboration, preparation, and community spirit in keeping Marion Township safe and connected.

“This is a tremendous addition to not just the Mitchell community but all of Marion Township because it’s such an upgrade in what the fire department is able to provide. From fire protection to EMT services, it’s such a huge step forward. They’re looking down the road 20 or 30 years and it’s a tremendous step forward for the community that’s been waiting for this for a long time.” said Mayor Don Caudell.
