Camp Invention set to spark young minds in Bedford with Discover program

BEDFORD — This summer, Lincoln Elementary School will once again transform into a hub of creativity and innovation as it hosts the 10th annual Camp Invention from June 23–27, 2025. Taking place at 2014 F Street, the nationally acclaimed STEM program will run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with extended care available for an additional fee.

Open to students entering grades K–9, Camp Invention invites young learners to embark on a one-of-a-kind experience filled with exciting, hands-on challenges. Children entering grades K–6 can register for $275, while those in grades 7–9 can join for $175. Extended care, which runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., is available for $100 per child.

This year’s program, themed “Discover,” introduces campers to four brand-new modules that emphasize real-world problem solving, innovation, and creativity:

  • Claw Arcade (Innovation): Kids build their own mechanical claw machine, create unique prizes, explore the science of motion, and learn entrepreneurial skills.
  • Illusion Workshop (Creativity): Campers dive into the science of optical illusions through art, animation, and special effects, designing their own visual tricks.
  • In Control (Problem Solving): Campers craft a road trip adventure complete with dashboard gadgets, transmitters, and maps—learning how to invent their way around obstacles.
  • Penguin Launch (Persistence): Children explore Antarctic environments and penguin biology while inventing eco-friendly prototypes using robotics and imagination.

The 2025 team is led by Director Jamie Hooten and Assistant Director Heather Umphress, both from Lincoln Elementary. Instructors include Brittany Chastain and Sara Perry (Shawswick), Kristie Fleetwood (Lincoln), and Maggie Finley (Orleans Middle School), with Amanda Nixon (Gateway) supporting as Camp Parent. Students from 16 different schools are expected to participate this year.
