The ISO presents Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, May 29-31, and Symphonie fantastique, June 13-14

INDIANAPOLIS—Conquer fate with the ISO May 29–31 as we welcome back conductor David Danzmayr for a program that features ISO Principal Bass, Ju-Fang Liu. Julia Perry’s A Short Piece for Orchestra opens the program with vibrant textures and contrasts, followed by the world premiere of Memoirs in Time, a newly commissioned bass concerto written by former ISO Principal Trombonist James Beckel. Performances begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29; 7 p.m., Friday, May 30; and 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31. Arrive 50 minutes before the concert starts on Friday and Saturday to hear Words on Music, a 20-minute presentation about the concert and what listeners can expect.

On June 13 and 14, the ISO winds will shine bright as Music Director Jun Märkl leads this colorful set of works. The program opens with Alborada del gracioso, Ravel’s take on the vibrant dance rhythms of Spain. ISO principal oboe Jennifer Christen and principal bassoon Ivy Ringel team up to perform the world premiere of a new double concerto by Indianapolis-based composer Hanna BennA Through Line. The concert ends with Berlioz inviting the audience into his wildest dreams in his psychedelic love letter, Symphonie fantastique. Buy tickets to Symphonie fantastique!
