BEDFORD—Superior STEAM, a prominent youth development program through the Lawrence County Purdue 4-H Extension Office, once again showcased the exceptional talent of its young members at the Area II 4-H Robotics Challenge, held over the weekend of May 17th. For the second year in a row, teams from Superior STEAM clinched both first- and second-place honors.

This year’s challenge required elementary-aged participants to solve a problem using a robot built and programmed from LEGO components and define the problem themselves. With a tight three-week deadline, teams had to conceptualize, design, build, and test their robotic solutions.

The “STEAMROLLERS” team ingeniously constructed a rock sorter. Their robot utilized a conveyor system and a sensor to identify and sort rocks into different containers based on color. Their innovative approach earned them the title of Reverse Champion, securing second place in the competition.

Meanwhile, the “Krazy Kats” team impressed judges with creating a robotic companion cat. This clever robot was programmed with various functionalities, including the ability to “chase a mouse,” purr when picked up, and even “run away.” The Krazy Kats’ creativity and programming prowess made them the overall Champion, taking home first place.
“This marks the second year in a row where Superior STEAM’s teams have brought home 1st and 2nd place from this challenge,” a spokesperson for Superior STEAM noted, highlighting the consistent excellence of the club’s participants.
Superior STEAM is dedicated to inspiring and teaching the next generation of scientists, artists, engineers, innovators, and leaders. The club offers various activities to expose students of all ages to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) principles.
