Trump proposes renaming Veterans Day

WASHINGTON D.C. – In a late-night social media post on Thursday, the former president outlined a proposal to rename Veterans Day as “Victory Day for World War I” and to create a new annual commemoration on May 8 designated as “Victory Day for World War II.”

In his statement, the former president asserted the United States’ decisive role in both global conflicts. “We won both wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything,” he wrote. He attributed this lack of celebration to what he described as a deficit in leadership.

“That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!” the former president’s post concluded.

Veterans Day is currently observed annually on November 11 to honor all those who have served in the U.S. armed forces. May 8 is recognized in some parts of the world as Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day), marking the formal acceptance by the Allies of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces at the end of World War II.

The proposal did not immediately elicit responses from veterans’ organizations or current government officials. Any formal change to federal holidays or their names would typically require legislative action.
