BEDFORD—The beloved musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, featuring lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, will open tomorrow at the Little Theatre of Bedford under the direction of Aaron Baker. The production promises a lively and melodic retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph for audiences of all ages.
Narrated entirely through song, the musical follows Joseph, the favored son of Jacob, as he faces familial jealousy, betrayal by his eleven brothers, and his subsequent journey into slavery in Egypt. Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams propels him from imprisonment to a position of power alongside an Elvis-inspired Pharaoh, ultimately leading to a dramatic reunion with his family.
The production at the Little Theatre of Bedford will showcase a wide array of musical genres, including a French ballad parody in “Those Canaan Days,” country-western in “One More Angel in Heaven,” and calypso in “Benjamin Calypso.” Audience members can also anticipate hearing the popular songs “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.”
Originally conceived as a brief children’s concert in 1968, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” has since expanded into a full-length professional musical enjoyed by schools and theatergoers globally. Its Broadway debut in 1982 earned six Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.
Performances are scheduled for Thursday, May 8, Friday, May 9, Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11. The evening shows will be at 7:00 p.m., and the Sunday matinee will be at 2:30 p.m. The following week will feature the same schedule, with performances on Thursday, May 15, Friday, May 16, Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18.
