The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County is offering free Summer Learning Labs from June 16 to July 18 at the Thornton Teen Center in Bedford. The program aims to provide high-quality academic support and enrichment activities to prevent summer learning loss and prepare students for the upcoming school year.
Each day, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., students will receive 90 minutes of literacy instruction and 75 minutes of math instruction from licensed teachers, with club staff assisting as teacher’s aides. The afternoon portion of the day, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., will consist of traditional Boys & Girls Club programs, including art, STEM, games, and gym activities. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., and lunch will be provided from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Drop-off is between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., with pick-up from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Parents can pick up their children anytime after 12:00 p.m., but morning attendance is required to meet program attendance requirements.
The Summer Learning Labs are open to students who will be in 1st through 7th grade for the 2025-2026 school year, meaning they will have completed kindergarten through 6th grade in the current 2024-2025 school year. Participation in the free program requires a registered Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County membership.
A minimum of 80% attendance is required for the Summer Learning Labs, as the program is funded through MindTrust, and continued funding depends on meeting attendance goals.
For families not interested in the intensive Summer Learning Labs, the Boys & Girls Club offers its regular summer camp at the Limestone Unit for $60 per week. The regular camp runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but transportation to the Limestone Unit is not provided for students attending the Bedford Summer Learning Labs.
