BEDFORD – A familiar landmark has been restored to its former glory, as the “Welcome to Bedford” sign once again graces Ind. 37, greeting visitors to the self-proclaimed “Limestone Capital of the World.” The sign, a fixture since the 1970s, has been fully refurbished and was remounted on its derrick on Thursday, marking the near completion of a city-led revitalization project.

The derrick and sign underwent an extensive year-long renovation. The structure was meticulously sandblasted and repainted, reinforced with new cables, and now sits on a newly poured concrete base. The sign features a sleek black background with crisp white lettering, constructed with a durable metal frame and aluminum panels to ensure longevity.
The sign serves a dual purpose, extending a warm welcome to those entering Bedford with the words “Welcome to Bedford” on its south-facing side, and offering a polite farewell with “Thank you for visiting Bedford” on the north side.

Bedford Mayor Sam Craig expressed his satisfaction with the progress. The city plans to add lights so that the sign is lit at night for better visibility.
The refurbishment project was made possible in part by a $100,000 Regional Economic Acceleration Development Initiative (READI) matching grant awarded to the city in 2023. These funds also supported the recent completion of the “Land of Limestone” exhibit at the StoneGate Arts & Education Center in 2024.
The original derrick, a piece of Lawrence County’s quarrying history, was first erected alongside the welcome sign in 1978. Over the decades, weather and time had taken their toll on the landmark, prompting Mayor Craig to prioritize its restoration.
Several local companies contributed to the successful completion of the project, including E&H Bridge Co., Johnny’s Signs, Gary Earl Welding, Infinity Solutions, and Needmore Powder Coating LLC. With the refurbished “Welcome to Bedford” sign now back in place, the city proudly reasserts its identity and extends its hospitality to all who enter.
