Greene County to launch “Food as Medicine” program

BLOOMFIELD—Greene County will launch a new 18-week program in May 2025 aimed at improving residents’ health through healthy eating choices. The “Food as Medicine” program targets healthy eating strategies for chronic disease maintenance and prevention.

The program will be held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Eastern Greene High School, 11064 E State Rd 54 in Bloomfield. It is a collaborative effort between the School of Public Health and the Center for Rural Engagement, Purdue University, Greene County Health, Greene County Health Department, and Greene County General Hospital.

Participants will benefit from nutritional education and live cooking demonstrations focused on making healthy choices, with recipes featuring DASH diet principles. The program will also provide 18 weeks of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other nutritional items sourced from local farmers and producers.

Additionally, the program includes biometric screenings at program intake, after 120 days, and one year after initial participation to track bodily changes. Comprehensive case management will also be offered, including medical and social determinants of health risk screening and check-ins to help remove any barriers to program completion.

Individuals interested in registering or referring a patient can contact the Greene County Health Department at (812) 384-4496.
