68 dogs seized in Bloomington hoarding situation doing well

BLOOMINGTON — The dogs seized from a hoarding and unauthorized breeding situation are doing well, according to officials at Bloomington Animal Care and Control.

The 68 “Carolina Dog” were seized from a home on North Adam Street on Friday, more than doubling the number of animals in the already full shelter.

The Monroe County Humane Association and Brown County Humane Society also housed a few of the dogs recovered from the home.

Officials reported there were 31 puppies and several pregnant dogs. The dogs range in various ages including senior dogs.

Dog Breeders in Bloomington are required to have a permit. Officials were responding to the home to see if the owner of the dogs did have the required permit. They didn’t expect to find 68 dogs living in cramped quarters and in distress.

All of the dogs were checked by a veterinarian over the weekend and treated if needed.

Some of the dogs will be ready for adoption next week.

The Bloomington Police Department is investigating the incident and it is possible criminal charges could be filed.
