According to BPD chief Terry Moore, Bell, along with other officers responded to a call on Dec. 17, which requested police check on a suicidal male.

When officers arrived, they were told the male was in the bathroom with a knife, Moore said. When officers got to the door, Moore said they noticed blood visible on the floor.

They then entered the room and began to try to remove the knife from the man’s hand but he was not compliant, said Moore. Eventually, Bell was able to safely remove the blade from the man’s hand.

“Because of Officer Bell’s quick response, this incident was resolved safely without serious injuries,” Moore said during Monday’s meeting. “Thank you Officer Bell for your dedication to those in need and to making Bedford a safer place to live and to raise a family.”

Bedford Mayor Sam Craig thanked Bell on behalf of the board, as well as the city.
