NATIONWIDE — Safety regulators have issued a nationwide recall for nearly 6 million French press coffee makers after dozens of consumers suffered severe burns when the glass carafes shattered during use.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Bodum USA is recalling approximately 5.9 million French presses across eight product lines. According to safety officials, the glass carafes can unexpectedly break or shatter if damaged or cracked, posing a serious burn hazard from hot coffee.

To date, Bodum USA has received 70 reports of glass pitchers breaking during use, resulting in 48 documented burn injuries.
Which Products Are Included in the Recall?
The recall impacts 8-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes sold individually and as part of complete French press units. The affected units include the following popular Bodum models:
- Bistro
- Brazil
- Caffettiera
- Chambord
- Crema
- Java
- Jesper
- Kenya
The “Bodum” brand name is typically embossed or stamped on the outer metal frame and inner lid of the coffee makers, and engraved directly onto the glass carafe alongside safety warnings.
The recalled units were sold at major retailers nationwide—including Target, Walmart, and coffee specialty shops—as well as online through Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, and Bodum.com from 1974 through October 2026, retailed between $15 and $65.
What Is Causing the Glass to Shatter?
CPSC investigations revealed that using metal spoons or metal utensils to stir coffee inside the glass carafe can create microscopic scratches, hairline cracks, or structural weakness in the glass. When exposed to hot water under pressure during brewing, the weakened glass can suddenly crack or burst.
What Consumers Should Do Immediately
- Stop Using Metal Spoons: Consumers should immediately cease using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee inside Bodum glass carafes.
- Inspect the Carafe: Carefully inspect glass carafes for any visible chips, scratches, or hairline cracks. Damaged glass units should be taken out of service right away.
- Request a Free Remediation Kit: Contact Bodum USA to receive a free plastic stirring spoon designed for glass carafes and an updated warning label.
