Submissions now open for 2027 Bloomington Trashion/Refashion Runway Show

BLOOMINGTON — Local eco-pioneers, fashion creators, models, and volunteers are invited to take part in the 18th annual Bloomington Trashion/Refashion Runway Show. The grassroots event and fundraiser for the Center for Sustainable Living is officially accepting submissions beginning Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, through Monday, Feb. 15, 2027.

The culmination of the project, the 2027 Trashion/Refashion Runway Show, will take place at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater on Sunday, April 18, 2027.

The competition is open to all skill levels, ranging from veteran fashion designers to newcomers equipped with a glue gun, stapler, and a passion for environmental sustainability.

All submitted garments must be constructed from at least 90% previously owned materials transformed from their original state to prevent items from ending up in landfills. Entries fall into two primary design categories:

  • Trashion Designs: High-fashion statements created from non-traditional trash and discarded items. Past entries have utilized packing materials, videotapes, venetian blinds, bottle caps, and dismantled furniture.
  • Refashion Designs: Contemporary garments made by reworking traditional fabrics, discarded clothing, or old attire, such as former graduation gowns, bridesmaid dresses, neckties, or scarves.

Creations may blend both Trashion and Refashion elements, and group submissions are encouraged. All design entries must be submitted through the official online database at bloomingtontrashion.org by Feb. 15, 2027, to be considered. Accepted designs will be announced no later than the week of March 8, 2027.

Models and Volunteer Opportunities

The organizers are also recruiting models of all ages, sizes, and experience levels to bring the creations to life on stage, as well as behind-the-scenes volunteers. Volunteers are needed for event planning, hair and makeup styling, ushering, and stage assistance. Application forms for models and volunteers can be accessed directly at bloomingtontrashion.org.

Trashion Exhibition at WonderLab in November

In advance of the 2027 runway show, selected garments from previous years will be on display in the stairwell gallery at the WonderLab Museum from Nov. 3 through Nov. 29, 2026.

WonderLab will also feature a Trashion table during its “Science of Art: Stitched and Salvaged with Discardia” event on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The hands-on program explores the materials science, math, and mending techniques behind fixing and repurposing worn textiles. The activity is free for WonderLab members and included with general admission.

Founded in 2010 by artist Jeanne Leimkuhler, the Trashion/Refashion event continues to unite the local community around sustainable living and creative reuse. For guidelines, submission links, and event schedules, visit bloomingtontrashion.org
