NATIONWIDE – Many smokers originally turned to e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional tobacco, but federal data show a growing trend across the United States: an increasing number of people are taking up vaping despite having never smoked a single cigarette in their lives.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 30% of adult vapers in the U.S.—roughly 3 in 10—never smoked traditional cigarettes. Among young adults aged 18 to 24 who vape, that figure skyrockets to over 61%. Research highlights that approximately 2.7 million young adults with no prior history of cigarette smoking actively use e-cigarettes.
Youth and Young Adults Drive the Surge
In the U.S., e-cigarette use is heavily concentrated among younger demographics. National survey data show that young adults aged 21 to 24 have the highest rate of e-cigarette use at 15.5%, followed closely by those aged 25 to 34 (12.6%) and adults aged 18 to 20 (10.3%). Overall, e-cigarette use among American adults climbed to 6.5%, with millions of high school and middle school students also reporting regular tobacco product use.

Young Americans often cite several reasons for picking up a vape, including:
- Flavors and Taste: Nearly 85% of adolescent users rely on flavored e-cigarettes, ranging from fruit to dessert blends.
- Ease of Use and Convenience: Sleek, handheld devices like disposables and pod-based systems offer high discreetness and lack the lingering smell of burning tobacco.
- The Nicotine Rush: High-nicotine formulations have surged in popularity, with nearly half of daily young adult vapers opting for high-nicotine products.
Health Implications and Risks
While traditional combustible tobacco use has steadily declined in the U.S., overall nicotine exposure remains high due to e-cigarettes. While health authorities generally consider vaping less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes, public health officials emphasize that it is not risk-free—particularly for individuals who were not previously exposed to the harmful effects of smoking.
Nicotine is highly addictive, and early exposure can harm adolescent brain development. Furthermore, studies indicate that non-smoking adolescents who vape are over three times more likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes later in life.
