October 28, 1941 – October 20, 2026
Jon Paul Woody lived a life many only dream of living. A hardworking man with a remarkable talent for fixing just about anything, Jon believed there was no job too big or task too small. He loved to work, and it never really mattered what he was doing—if there was something to be built, repaired, or accomplished, on was always ready to get to it.
Born to Glenn and Roberta (Edwards) Woody, and raised on Woody Farm Road, Jon grew up alongside his brothers, Jim and Joe. He was the middle child and carried with him throughout his life the values of hard work, determination, and family. Jon graduated from Shawswick High School class of 1960, beginning a lifetime of hard work, learning, and sharing his many talents with others.
Early in his career, Jon worked at Broadview Bowling Alley and Johnny’s Signs, but he found his true calling as a pipe fitter. He was a member of the Plumbers & Steam Fitters Union Local 136 for more than 50 years, building a career that took him to countless buildings and plants throughout the State. Jon also spent many years teaching welding at the Local 136 Apprenticeship School in Bloomington, passing along his knowledge and skills to the next generation. He took pride in his work, and anyone who rode along with him knew they were in for a tour. Jon could point out nearly every building or plant he had ever worked in, and he was always happy to tell you about it!
In December 1979, Jon married Vicky Prow, beginning a marriage filled with love, family, and shared memories. Together, they built a life that would grow to include children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who would benefit from Jon’s example, wisdom, and generous spirit.
Jon had many interests, but cars held a special place in his heart. He loved rebuilding, restoring, and making each vehicle his own. If something was broken, Jon could fix it—and if it could be made better, he would find a way. Among his prized vehicles were a 1973 Ford F-100 and a 1939 Chevrolet Business Coupe, both reflecting his love of craftsmanship and all things mechanical.
Jon was also a proud member of the National Rifle Association and a master marksman. His accomplishments in marksmanship were a source of pride, and his record at Friendship remains a testament to his skill.
A man of many talents, Jon shared much more than his knowledge of tools, welding, and mechanics. He passed his skills, work ethic, and determination down to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, leaving a lasting legacy that will live on through the generations. He was the kind of man who could fix almost anything, teach you something along the way, and leave you with a story to remember.
Beneath his familiar white hair and mustache was a friendly smile—and, more often than not, a tale or two ready to be told. Jon will be remembered for his hardworking nature, his many talents, his love of family, and the unmistakable personality that made him who he was.
Jon is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Vicky; his children, William (Robin) Woody, JoniSue (Matt) Ryan, Blaine (Miles) Parker, Jonathan (Lynlee) Woody, and Alecia (Marc) Bentley; his grandchildren, Jamie, Julia, Will, Jesse, Luke, Vivienne, Sophie, Jaden, Wade, Everett, and Brooks; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Roberta Woody, and his son, James Woody.
He was a member of First Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Jon Woody Memorial Scholarship through the BNL Scholarship Foundation. The scholarship will support a young person interested in pursuing a career as a pipe fitter, carrying Jon’s passion for his trade and his commitment to teaching others into the next generation.
Jon leaves behind a legacy built with his own two hands, strengthened by a lifetime of hard work, and carried forward by the many people he loved and taught along the way. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24th, at Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23rd, and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at Day & Carter Mortuary.
