INDIANA — With the final quarter of the year underway, the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is reminding taxpayers who requested extra time to submit their 2025 individual income tax returns that the official state deadline is rapidly approaching on Monday, Nov. 16, 2026.

While the standard federal filing extension deadline is Oct. 15, Indiana law provides individual filers an additional month to finalize and submit their state returns. Taxpayers who received an automatic federal extension (IRS Form 4868) automatically qualify for the extended state filing timeline without needing to submit separate state paperwork.
DOR officials urge remaining extension holders to complete their filings before the Nov. 16 cutoff to avoid incurring late-filing penalties.
Key Rules to Keep in Mind
State tax administrators emphasize several important guidelines for individuals completing their delayed 2025 returns:
- Extension to File, Not to Pay: An extension provides additional time to organize records and complete return forms; it does not extend the deadline to pay tax liabilities. Indiana required taxpayers to pay at least 90% of their estimated 2025 state tax liability by the original April 15 deadline to prevent failure-to-pay penalties.
- Interest Appreciates on Remaining Balances: Even if an extension was properly filed and 90% of taxes were remitted on time, state law dictates that interest continues to accrue on any remaining unpaid tax balance from April 15 until the payment is settled in full.
- Penalties for Late Filing: Submitting a state tax return after the Nov. 16 deadline will result in late-filing administrative penalties, calculated as a percentage of any unpaid tax liability.
How to File and Submit Payments
Taxpayers can complete their state returns electronically through approved third-party tax software or directly via INTIME (Indiana Taxpayer Information Management Engine), the state’s official online tax portal.
INTIME allows users to make electronic payments, view payment histories, submit correspondence, and check the status of pending state refunds.
