LOWELL— A three-day high-intensity enforcement initiative led by the Indiana State Police (ISP) Lowell District resulted in 62 arrests and nearly 1,000 traffic citations as state troopers targeted violent crime and aggressive driving across Northwest Indiana.
The effort, designated “Operation BASH,” ran from September 22 through September 24. The operation was named in honor of four local law enforcement officers involved in officer-involved shootings earlier this summer: Trooper Benjamin Beers, Trooper Paul Arnold, LaPorte County Deputy Jon Samuelson, and ISP Sgt. Justin Heflin.
Targeted Enforcement and Interstate Pursuits
Operation BASH focused heavily on removing serious violent felons from the streets, intercepting illicit criminal activity, and curbing aggressive driving behaviors on regional roadways.
According to state police, seven of the 62 individuals taken into custody possessed significant criminal histories that included violent felonies. The operation also involved 10 vehicle and foot pursuits. Two high-speed vehicular pursuits crossed state lines into Illinois, leading to the apprehension of three serious violent felons, two of whom were armed with firearms at the time of their arrest.
“Northwest Indiana saw an unprecedented level of collaboration this week,” said Indiana State Police Superintendent Anthony Scott. “Troopers from all corners of the state, whether from patrol, specialty units, or investigative divisions, stepped up to assist our Lowell Post’s focus on violent crime reduction and roadway safety. This project reflects our ongoing commitment to protecting the communities we serve.”
The multi-divisional effort drew personnel from every ISP district statewide, integrating specialized teams such as the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED), SWAT, Mustang High-Performance Vehicle units, Investigative Sciences, and the Drug Enforcement Section.

State police officials noted that data from Operation BASH will be evaluated alongside regional crime and traffic trends to plan future tactical operations throughout Indiana.
