BLOOMINGTON — As Season 51 of the hit CBS reality series Survivor premieres, Hoosier fans have a local competitor to cheer on as she attempts to outwit, outplay, and outlast her fellow castaways in Fiji.
Angelica “Jelly” Loblack, a sociology professor at Indiana University and staff member at IU’s Center for Research on Race and Ethnicity in Society, is among the 21 contestants competing for the $1 million prize and the title of Sole Survivor.
Loblack’s appearance has generated significant excitement across the Bloomington campus, where colleagues, students, and faculty have organized weekly viewing events and are throwing watch parties.
Loblack revealed that she chose to keep her professional background as a university professor a secret from her tribemates—a classic strategic maneuver used by castaways to avoid being targeted as an intellectual threat early in the game.
Despite keeping her career under wraps, Loblack noted that her expertise in human behavior and group dynamics proved invaluable in the harsh conditions of camp life.
Season 51 marks a major structural shift for the long-running franchise, officially kicking off what host and executive producer Jeff Probst introduced to the cast as the “Open Era”, which means nothing is off limits — not advantages, rewards, challenges, or marooning.
The dynamic format created an unpredictable environment across camp negotiations, physical challenges, and emotional Tribal Councils, allowing players to draw on strategic elements from the show’s 25-year history.
