GREENFIELD – In April of 2026, Indiana State Police received a request to conduct an investigation into an allegation of intimidation. The suspect in this case was identified as 33-year-old James Heneghan, a Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The Hancock County Sheriff had referred this investigation to the McCordsville Police Department, which then forwarded the investigation to the Indiana State Police. When the allegations were made, Heneghan was placed on leave from the Sheriff’s Office.
ISP Detectives began investigating the allegation, which stemmed from threatening text messages from Heneghan to another person. As the investigation progressed, detectives discovered evidence of improper use of automatic license plate reading cameras. Through an extensive audit, detectives found unauthorized searches in the license plate reading camera database. The searches were specific to people Heneghan was familiar with.
Working closely with the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office, detectives ultimately submitted probable cause for intimidation, official misconduct, and fraud.
A warrant was issued for the arrest of Heneghan, and it was served this morning by Indiana State Police Detectives. He was taken into custody and subsequently incarcerated at the Hancock County Jail.
The charges listed above are merely accusations. All suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court. All crimes mentioned in this release are alleged.
