BLOOMINGTON – Following a community naming process that received more than 130 name suggestions and 288 voting responses, two new lanes planned for Hopewell South will be named W. Heartwell Lane and W. Possibility Lane.
Residents submitted proposed names from Sept. 10-15. City staff reviewed submissions for eligibility and selected five finalists for a public vote held Sept. 16-20.
W. Heartwell Lane will be the northern lane. The resident who submitted the name described Heartwell as combining “heart” and “well,” honoring the care and compassion associated with the former hospital site while carrying that spirit into the neighborhood’s future. The resident also noted the connection to Hopewell and the idea of a place where people feel at home, neighbors care for one another, and well-being grows through community.
W. Possibility Lane will be the southern lane. The resident who submitted the name described Possibility as future-facing and open-ended, fitting Hopewell as a new model for neighborhood development and reflecting the possibilities represented by what comes next at the site.
Residents voted separately on names for each lane. Heartwell received 30.6% of the vote for the northern lane and 26% for the southern lane. Because it received its strongest support for the northern location, W. Heartwell Lane was selected there. W. Possibility Lane, the next-highest vote-getter for the southern lane at 20.8%, was selected for the southern location.
Hopewell South is the first phase of the City-led redevelopment of the former Bloomington Hospital site. The project will include 98 homes, new streets and utilities, and connections to the surrounding neighborhood and B-Line Trail.
The City will host a public meeting on Hopewell on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 5:30 p.m. at Bloomington First Church of the Nazarene, 700 W. Howe Street. The meeting will offer a broader update on Hopewell. More information, including an agenda, will be shared closer to the meeting.
