INDIANA — Indiana Operation Lifesaver (INOL), in partnership with the Indiana State Police and rail safety organizations across the state, has officially kicked off Indiana Rail Safety Week, running from Sept. 21–27, 2026.
The initiative marks the 15th anniversary of Indiana’s dedicated Rail Safety Week, alongside the 10th anniversary of Operation Lifesaver’s national “See Tracks? Think Train!” campaign. Governor Mike Braun issued a statewide proclamation recognizing the week, emphasizing the critical role of public education in preventing collisions, injuries, and fatalities on and around railroad tracks.
Nationwide, a person or vehicle is struck by a train every three hours. Despite widespread safety infrastructure, more than 60% of vehicle-train collisions occur at railroad crossings equipped with active warning devices, such as lights or gates.
“Fifteen years of Indiana Rail Safety Week gives us a lot to celebrate, but our mission remains just as important today,” said Jessica Fender, Executive Director of Indiana Operation Lifesaver. “This year we are expanding our efforts across the state with volunteers, law enforcement, railroads, and community partners. Our goal is to give people the information they need to make safe decisions around tracks and trains and prevent tragedies before they happen.”
Statewide Outreach and Enforcement
Throughout the week, INOL, law enforcement agencies, first responders, and volunteer teams will host safety and educational programs across Indiana. Key areas of focus include:
- Pedestrian and Trespass Prevention: Educating communities on the dangers of walking on or near railroad property.
- Crossing Safety: Reminding drivers to obey all active signals, gates, and warning signs.
- Professional Driver Education: Providing specialized guidance for commercial operators navigating grade crossings.
- Operation Clear Track: Scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 22, this targeted initiative brings together law enforcement agencies to enforce crossing-safety and anti-trespass laws at high-traffic railroad crossings.
The 15th anniversary campaign receives key support from major rail partners, including CSX, CN, Pinsly Railroad Company, and the Indiana Rail Road, as well as local government and public safety groups.
