MORGANTOWN — Girl Scouts of Central Indiana has suspended all equine activities for the rest of the season at Camp Gallahue following the death of a horse and growing public concern over the welfare of other animals on site.
The decision comes after photos circulated on social media depicting a deceased horse alongside other horses that appeared to be in poor condition at the rural Brown County camp.
Lauren Palmer, Director of Communications for Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, said they are saddened by the passing of the horse at Camp Gallahue due to an unexpected illness.
According to Palmer, the horses at the camp are owned by a local provider and leased to the Girl Scouts for seasonal youth programs. She noted that once leadership became aware of the issue, the organization worked directly with the owner to ensure all remaining horses received immediate veterinary attention. As a precaution, all horse programming for the remainder of the season has been cancelled.
The incident has drawn the attention of state authorities. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health confirmed it is investigating the matter after receiving a formal complaint.
Neither the Brown County Sheriff’s Department nor Brown County Animal Control has released any formal statement on the incident.
