GREENE COUNTY — The Greene County Sheriff’s Department is warning local residents to be on high alert following multiple reports of phone scammers impersonating law enforcement officers.
According to the department, community members have reported receiving phone calls from an individual claiming to represent the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. The scammer claims that the person called missed jury duty and may have an active warrant out for their arrest.

The caller threatens that if the victim hangs up, a criminal investigation will be initiated against them. The impersonator then demands a fee to settle the matter and avoid arrest or further legal action.
Sheriff’s Department officials emphasized that these calls are fraudulent and are not coming from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department or any of its personnel.
“The Greene County Sheriff’s Department will never call you asking for payment over the phone,” officials said in a press release.
Residents who receive one of these calls are strongly advised to hang up immediately and to never provide any personal identity details, banking credentials, or payment information over the phone.
