17-year-old arrested following fatal shooting outside Columbus apartment complex

COLUMBUS A local community is mourning the loss of a 17-year-old boy following a fatal shooting on the city’s east side Friday evening, which has led to the arrest of another teenager on a preliminary murder charge.

Officers with the Columbus Police Department (CPD) and emergency first responders were dispatched at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11, to the 3200 block of Country Brook Street North after receiving reports of gunfire outside an apartment complex. Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by emergency medics, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a physical altercation involving a group of juveniles broke out in the area shortly before the shots were fired.

On Saturday, September 12, CPD detectives arrested a 17-year-old male suspect in connection with the incident on a preliminary charge of murder. The Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office will review the investigation to make final formal charging determinations.

In light of the arrest, law enforcement officials urged parents and community members to actively address youth violence and firearm access.
