WASHINGTON — Authorities in Daviess County are investigating the death of a 79-year-old local resident whose body was recovered from a swimming pool Thursday morning, September 3, 2026.
According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, emergency dispatchers received a 911 call shortly before 11:00 a.m. reporting an unresponsive male in a swimming pool at a home located at 4831 South State Road 57, south of Washington.
Deputies with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from the Veale Volunteer Fire District responded to the scene and located the deceased victim, identified as 79-year-old Melvin Robinson.
Investigators report that Robinson resided directly across the highway from where he was found, in the 4850 block of South State Road 57.
Preliminary information gathered by law enforcement suggests Robinson may have become disoriented sometime after 9:15 a.m., crossed the road, and entered the pool on the neighboring property. Officials have not stated what may have caused the disorientation or the circumstances of his entry into the water.
The investigation into the official cause and manner of death remains active. The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office is serving as the lead investigating agency and is being assisted by the Daviess County Coroner’s Office, Daviess Community Hospital Ambulance Service, and Veale Volunteer Fire District.
