SEYMOUR – Under the lights with a late start, Seymour rolled to a 5-0 victory over Bedford North Lawrence during boys high school tennis action on Thursday night.
The Owls, with the match moved back because of the heat index, weren’t bothered by the humidity or the feels-like temperature. They dropped only three games in singles and won a first-set tiebreaker at No.1 doubles en route to the win, improving to 11-0 overall.
Carter Stein stopped Laedon Jones 6-0, 6-0 at No.1 singles, while Dane Thompson duplicated that score with a victory over Aden Ralston at No.2. Cash Stein dropped Levi Thompson 6-1, 6-2 at No.3.
“Our singles courts had a hard time finding a rhythm,” BNL coach Ian Dillman said. “We’d get a few points and bring the games to deuce, but we had too many errors on points that mattered the most. Levi was able to find something in his second set and started ripping on the balls. It just came down to who could hit the ball over the net one more time.”
In doubles, Braylon Busby and David Lemming conquered BNL’s Jackson Corey and Asher Thompson 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 at No.1, while Gus Henry and Max Payne topped the new BNL tandem of Trey Kiser and Traeden Robinson 6-2, 6-2 at No.2.
”We had a new doubles duo and they actually competed very well,” Dillman said. “It was obvious there was some nerves out there and not wanting to make mistakes. But that’s the game, you have to make mistakes to learn what works and what doesn’t.
”No.1 doubles had the closest match. It was a shame we lost the first set in a tiebreaker. I would’ve loved to see how it would’ve played out if we got that first set. We were playing phenomenal tonight. They actually looked like a doubles team, and I enjoyed watching them. I saw some great shots from Asher when he had to hit some on-the-run shots, and Jackson was all over the net.
”Overall, I’m happy with this match. It gave us a preview of not only the sectional, but a small glimpse into conference week.”
The Stars (5-3) will travel to North Daviess on Saturday.
