BLOOMINGTON — Registration is officially underway for Bloomington Youth Basketball (BYB) Season II, the premier recreational basketball league in the city operated by Bloomington Parks and Recreation. Local officials are issuing a call for community members to step up as volunteer coaches for the upcoming fall program.
Hosted at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center (1700 W. Bloomfield Rd.), BYB is designed to welcome players of all athletic backgrounds. Unlike competitive travel leagues, BYB maintains a strict “no cut” policy, guaranteeing every participant—from complete beginners to seasoned players—a spot on a team and equal playing time. The program emphasizes physical fitness, fundamental skill development, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Season Structure and Divisions
The Season II schedule runs from October 12 through December 10, pausing for a holiday break during the week of Thanksgiving (November 23–27).
- Practices & Games: Teams will hold two practices during their opening week, followed by a schedule of one practice and one game per week for the remainder of the season.
- League Divisions: Leagues are coed for athletes from Kindergarten through 3rd Grade. Starting in Grade 4, boys and girls transition into separate divisions.
Volunteer Coaches Needed
League organizers emphasize that volunteer coaches serve as the backbone of the program, providing hands-on instruction to teach young athletes the fundamentals of Indiana’s signature pastime.
The league is currently seeking head and assistant volunteer coaches, with high-need divisions including:
- Coed Divisions: Kindergarten through 3rd Grade
- Boys Divisions: Grades 4–5
- Girls Divisions: Grades 4–6
All potential coaches are required to attend a mandatory meeting and player draft on Wednesday, September 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center. Open skill evaluation sessions for youth players will take place in the days leading up to the draft, with staff evaluation scores provided to any volunteer coaches unable to attend their division’s specific evaluation session.
