INDIANA — With crisp autumn air around the corner, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging hunters to finalize their preparations for the upcoming 2026–2027 deer hunting season.
Indiana continues to stand out as a premier destination for white-tailed deer hunting. Since 2016, the state has consistently ranked among the top in the nation for the number of Boone & Crockett trophy whitetails harvested per square mile, making local woods a high-yield destination for both seasoned and returning hunters.
2026–2027 Season Dates
State wildlife officials have established the schedule for the upcoming hunting disciplines:
- Deer Reduction Zone: Sept. 15, 2026 – Jan. 31, 2027 (in designated zones)
- Youth Season: Sept. 26 & 27, 2026
- Archery Season: Oct. 1, 2026 – Jan. 3, 2027
- Firearms Season: Nov. 14 – Nov. 29, 2026
- Muzzleloader Season: Dec. 5 – Dec. 20, 2026
Reserved Hunt Applications open now through September 16.
Hunters looking to explore new hunting grounds have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 16, to submit applications for Indiana’s reserved deer hunt draws.
The program provides limited-access opportunities designed to manage hunter density while offering high-quality access to DNR-managed public and private lands. Available properties in the draw include select Indiana State Parks, Fish & Wildlife Areas, Nature Preserves, National Wildlife Refuges, and participating private properties enrolled in the Indiana Private Lands Access Program (IPLA).
All reserved hunt submissions must be completed online, and applicants must possess a valid Indiana hunting license for their chosen hunt prior to entry.
Licensing and Digital Tools
Hunters are encouraged to purchase their licenses early to avoid opening-day delays. Licenses are available online, through authorized retail agents, or as a durable hard card.
The DNR recommends downloading the official GoOutdoorsIN smartphone app. The mobile platform allows hunters to store and sync digital licenses directly on their devices, access regulations, locate public lands, and fulfill mandatory harvest check-in requirements directly from the field.
