SALEM — A national symbol received a life-saving assist on Saturday after being struck by a vehicle along a Washington County highway.
An Indiana State Police trooper and local wildlife officials stepped in to rescue an injured bald eagle found stranded in the roadway on State Road 60 near Salem. Trooper Nathan Teusch spotted the majestic bird in distress following the collision and quickly moved to secure the scene.
Teusch safely contained the injured eagle directly in the roadway, staying with the bird to prevent further harm until an Indiana Conservation Officer arrived on location to take custody.
Upon initial assessment, officials determined the eagle had suffered broken bones from the impact. The conservation officer transported the bird to the Raptor Center at Hardy Lake near Scottsburg, where specialists will provide dedicated rehabilitation and ongoing care in hopes of recovering the eagle for eventual release.
