Year-long street closures planned in downtown Columbus for water tower replacement project

COLUMBUS Drivers in downtown Columbus, Indiana, should prepare for extended traffic disruptions beginning next month as city crews launch a major infrastructure project.

According to Columbus City Utilities, downtown street closures will take effect in early September 2026 to facilitate the complete replacement of a municipal water tower. The year-long construction effort is projected to continue through the end of September 2027.

The utility department announced that the project will require the following road closures:

  • 18th Street: Closed from Elm Street to the alley located directly west of the water tower.
  • Elm Street: Closed from 18th Street south to the water tower property line.

Motorists traveling through the downtown area are advised to seek alternate routes and allow extra travel time during the construction period.

Infrastructure Modernization Efforts

The upcoming replacement is part of broader ongoing capital improvement initiatives by Columbus City Utilities aimed at upgrading aging municipal water infrastructure and supporting local growth.

  • Water System Upgrades: The utility recently expanded its distribution system through major projects, including the completion of the 2-million-gallon Deaver Road Water Tank and booster station to improve overall storage capacity and pressure.
  • Downtown Main Replacements: Local crews continue to coordinate water system repairs and water main updates alongside major road rehabilitation projects across downtown corridors.
