Mitchell woman arrested on methamphetamine charges following traffic stop

BEDFORD A Mitchell woman faces drug charges after a late-night traffic stop in Bedford led officers to discover methamphetamine residue on cut drinking straws inside a vehicle.

Brittany K. Mundy

Brittany K. Mundy, 31, was arrested by Bedford Police officers on Saturday, August 15, on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Clay Blackburn, the incident began around 11:33 p.m. on Saturday. Officer Blackburn was patrolling near State Road 37 and Dixie Highway when he spotted a red Pontiac Grand Prix traveling southbound with expired license plates.

After verifying that the vehicle’s registration had expired in February 2026, the officer initiated a traffic stop along Dixie Highway near the entrance to the Hubler Automobile Dealership.

Police spoke to the male driver and the passenger, Brittany Mundy. Neither occupant possessed a physical driver’s license at the time, with Mundy stating her identification had previously been stolen. The driver informed the officer he had just purchased the vehicle a day prior.

During the interaction, officers noted the driver appeared overly nervous, was sweating profusely, and had shaking hands while handing over an out-of-state vehicle title. A background check revealed that both the driver and Mundy had suspended driving privileges with prior convictions.

After being informed of his rights regarding vehicle searches, the driver gave officers consent to search the car. Mundy also consented to a search of her personal belongings inside the vehicle.

During the search, Officer Haluda located a soft cigarette case positioned between the two front seats near the center console. Inside the case, officers found two cut drinking straws containing a white, crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

When questioned by police after being advised of their Miranda rights, both occupants initially denied ownership of the soft cigarette case, though the driver subsequently indicated the items belonged to Brittany Mundy.

Mundy was taken into custody and transported by Officer Daugherty to the Lawrence County Jail, where she was lodged.

The driver was put through Standardized Field Sobriety Testing at the scene, which they passed. They were issued a written warning for the expired registration plates and a court summons to appear in Lawrence County Superior Court II on August 31 for driving while their driver’s license was suspended with a prior Conviction.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the probable cause affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
