Obituary: John William Fountain II

September 20, 1948 – August 14, 2026

John William Fountain II, 77, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, at Redcrest Hospice House.

After spending 49 wonderful years living in Paoli, he relocated to Bloomington in 2024 to be closer to his family. Born September 20, 1948, in Bedford, he was the son of John W. and Doris Catherine (Blackburn) Fountain.

John was a graduate of Shawswick High School, class of 1966. He earned an athletic scholarship to play basketball at Georgia Southern University, where he was a founding member of the Kappa-Zeta chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts. He later attended Indiana State University, where he received a master’s degree in Education. He was a beloved teacher at Springs Valley High School for 36 years, where he began teaching industrial arts and later taught computer/media classes. In his early career, he coached multiple sports and taught driver’s education. He was baptized and of the Christian faith.

John loved farming and raising cattle. He was a former member of the Orange County Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Bureau, and was a board member of the Orange County Co-Op. He enjoyed woodworking, farming, computers, and traveling. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play basketball, and loved times when they all watched college basketball together. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and his two grandsons, who were his greatest joy in life. He was known and loved by many as a kind, caring, and generous man.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Debbie (Dalton) Fountain; two daughters, Erin Fountain and Lindsay Wilson and husband Ben; two grandchildren, Caleb Joseph Wilson and Logan William Wilson; one sister, Susan Cessna and husband Jim; and one brother, Jerry Fountain and wife June.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Doris Fountain; and grandparents, Cletus and Gertrude Fountain, and Cyrus and Mable Blackburn.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jeremy Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Orleans. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20 th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
