INDIANA — Dan Emerson, Chief Legal Officer for the Indianapolis Colts, is set to step down later this year, concluding a distinguished 42-year career with the franchise that traces back to the team’s arrival in Indiana.
Emerson was originally hired to represent the Colts by then-owner Robert Irsay when the franchise relocated to Indianapolis in 1984. Before joining the NFL team, he practiced law with the Indianapolis-based firm Bose McKinney & Evans.
Throughout his four-decade tenure, Emerson guided the franchise through critical legal milestones, district negotiations, and major infrastructural developments.
“Dan Emerson has played an integral role in so many significant decisions, negotiations, and projects since the Colts arrived here in 1984, including our lease with the city and the construction of Lucas Oil Stadium,” said Colts Owner & CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon in a released statement. “Our father and grandfather had so much trust in Dan’s judgement and the ultimate respect for him as a professional and a person, and he’s likewise been an invaluable resource to my sisters and me.”
“We can’t be more grateful to Dan for helping build our organization and business into what it is today, but we’re happy he’ll soon be able to spend more time doing what he loves most – being a husband, dad, and grandfather,” Irsay-Gordon added.
Following Emerson’s retirement later this year, Elijah Hammans will step in to succeed him as general counsel for the organization.
