BROWNSTOWN — Detectives from the Indiana State Police Versailles Post are conducting a death investigation after a 47-year-old inmate incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail passed away following a medical emergency in his cell.
According to authorities, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department requested state police intervention on July 25, 2026, after inmate Richard E. Cox, of Crothersville, Indiana, was discovered unresponsive in his housing area.
Cox had been arrested three days prior, on July 22, 2026, and remained in custody up until the incident.
Upon discovering Cox unresponsive on July 25, jail staff immediately initiated first aid and summoned local fire and EMS personnel to the facility. Medical crews transported Cox to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana, before he was airlifted to an Indianapolis-area hospital for specialized care.
Despite medical efforts, Cox was pronounced deceased four days later, on July 29, 2026.
Initial investigative findings indicate that Cox was alone in his housing area when he became unresponsive. State police noted there is currently no indication that foul play by either jail staff or other inmates contributed to the incident.
The investigation into Cox’s death remains open and ongoing as detectives await the final results of autopsy and toxicology reports.
