SCOTTSBURG — Just weeks after 42 dogs were rescued from a Scott County home that drew statewide attention for its deplorable conditions, every dog needing a spay/neuter surgery has received full funding through Pet Friendly Services of Indiana, clearing a vital hurdle toward their adoption into forever homes.
Following the removal of the dogs from the home, Southern Indiana Animal Rescue and other rescue partners acted quickly to place the animals into foster care. To assist with the sudden influx of medical needs, Pet Friendly Services responded by providing $2,800 through its Pet Friendly license plate program to cover the cost of 28 spay/neuter surgeries for the dogs that had not yet been altered.
“Seeing these dogs finally safe and knowing we can start finding them loving homes is why we do this work every day,” said Trish Roehm, president of Southern Indiana Animal Rescue. “We are so grateful for the community partners who stepped up.”
Cheri Storms, executive director of Pet Friendly Services of Indiana, emphasized the vital role local organizations play during crises.
“Situations like this show just how much local shelters, rescues, and volunteers mean to their communities,” Storms said. “When large-scale cases happen, these organizations step up without hesitation to provide medical care, shelter, and a second chance for animals who have been through so much. We’re grateful to support their efforts and hopeful that each of these dogs will soon find the safe, loving home they deserve.”
Path to Adoption
Of the 42 rescued dogs, 27 were quickly placed in foster homes after the court released them. The remaining dogs continued receiving care through Scott County Animal Control while rescue partners worked diligently to secure additional placements.

Funding for emergencies like the Scott County rescue is made possible through Indiana’s Pet Friendly specialty license plate. The plate program allows Pet Friendly Services of Indiana to fund nearly 14,000 spay/neuter surgeries each year for dogs and cats across the state.
