FSSA and covering kids and families to host statewide public town halls on upcoming HIP work requirements

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA), in partnership with Covering Kids & Families, will host a series of public town halls across Indiana to inform Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) members, healthcare providers, and community partners about upcoming work and community engagement requirements.

The informational sessions are designed to help Hoosiers prepare for the transition ahead of enforcement, which takes effect on January 1, 2027. Under the updated guidelines, most adult HIP members ages 19 to 64 will be required to complete and report at least 80 hours per month of qualifying activities—such as employment, job training, education, or community service—to maintain their healthcare coverage, unless they qualify for an exemption.

Scheduled Town Hall Meetings

The public town halls will kick off in Northern Indiana during August and September, with additional statewide dates and locations to be announced throughout the year:

  • Elkhart County Session

What to Expect

During the town halls, representatives from FSSA and Covering Kids & Families will walk attendees through the operational details of the program. Topics covered will include:

  • Qualifying Activities: How members can meet the 80-hour monthly threshold through employment, half-time schooling, apprenticeships, or volunteer work.
  • Exemption Criteria: Who is exempt from the requirement, including pregnant women, primary caregivers of young children, former foster youth under 26, veterans with disability ratings, and medically frail individuals.
  • Reporting Tools: How to navigate the online FSSA Benefits Portal (fssabenefits.in.gov) to log hours, submit verification documents, or claim an exemption.

Healthcare navigators, community advocates, and HIP members are encouraged to attend to ask questions and learn how to navigate the upcoming changes. For additional resources or to create a benefits account ahead of the sessions, visit myfssa.in.gov.
