MITCHELL — A Mitchell man was arrested Wednesday evening after police say he admitted to pushing his mother’s head during a domestic dispute at their home.
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers with the Mitchell Police Department were dispatched at approximately 6:39 p.m. July 22 to a residence in the 800 block of West Warren Street on a report of a battery. Dispatch advised officers that the alleged victim, Staggs’ 60-year-old mother, had left the residence and was walking east on Woodville Road.
Officers Jacob McMillen and G. Jacobs located the victim and spoke with her while Officer Phillip Emery remained at the residence. After officers attempted to make contact at the home, 34-year-old Jordan Staggs answered the door and allowed officers inside.
Police said Staggs told Officer Emery that he had been involved in a verbal argument with his mother over an alleged theft. According to the affidavit, Staggs admitted that, in an attempt to quiet her, he pushed her head downward with his hand.
After speaking with Staggs further outside the residence and advising him of his Miranda rights, officers said he again acknowledged pushing his mother’s head during the argument.
Staggs was taken into custody on a charge of Class A misdemeanor domestic battery. Officers searched him before transport and recovered a lighter and a pack of cigarettes. His father gathered medication and clothing before Staggs was transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
The charge is an allegation, and Staggs is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
