Dementia education program to help community understand normal aging, warning signs

MITCHELL – Community members will have an opportunity to learn the difference between normal age-related memory changes and signs that could indicate dementia during a free educational program at the Mitchell Community Public Library this fall.

The presentation, “What is Normal vs. Not Normal in Aging,” will be held Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Mitchell Community Public Library. The program is presented by the Rural Dementia Network and is open to adults ages 18 and older.

The session will explore common cognitive changes that often occur as people age, such as occasionally forgetting why they entered a room or having difficulty recalling a person’s name. Presenters will discuss how these experiences differ from abnormal cognitive changes that may warrant evaluation by a healthcare professional.

Organizers hope the program will help attendees better recognize the signs of healthy aging while increasing awareness of symptoms associated with dementia and other cognitive disorders.

Registration is required to attend. Those interested can reserve a spot by calling the Mitchell Community Public Library at 812-849-2412.
