BEDFORD — Despite a traditionally slow month for official business, the Altrusa Club of Bedford remained highly active in July, executing several community service initiatives and celebrating leadership transitions within local civic organizations.
Members kicked off the month’s activities with a pitch-in supper ahead of their July meeting. While formal club business typically slows during the mid-summer weeks, Altrusa members spent July volunteering for numerous local community causes, many of which also receive financial sponsorship from the club.
Among the community service highlights:
- Life Pantry Donation: Club member Sara Kern prepared and delivered 16.5 gallons of homemade laundry detergent to the Life Pantry, marking another successful installment of her ongoing support for the local resource center.
- Nursing Home Outreach: Loretta Bailey coordinated the distribution of 200 magazines across five local nursing homes. Additionally, member Donna Rainey utilized her thrifty shopping skills to assemble patriotic gift bags for residents of Core Nursing Home. Designed to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, each gift bag featured a hairbrush set, notebooks, pens, snacks, and personal care items.
- Holiday Fundraising: Altrusa members volunteered to “Ring-The-Bell” for the Salvation Army’s local “Christmas in July” fundraising campaign.
The club also celebrated a leadership milestone for one of its prominent members. Mary Barnes, a past president of the Bedford Altrusa Club, was named the new president of the Fayetteville Lions Club.
The Altrusa Club of Bedford will hold its next meeting on Monday, Aug. 10, at the Southland Church of Christ annex. During the meeting, members will assemble book bags for preschool students as part of the club’s annual educational outreach project.
