Hoosier Hills Ham Club to host amateur radio event at Spring Mill State Park for Grissom Days this Saturday

MITCHELL The Hoosier Hills Ham Club will host a special amateur radio event on Saturday, July 18, as part of Spring Mill State Park’s annual celebration honoring hometown astronaut Gus Grissom.

Club members and equipment will be stationed at the park’s Sycamore Shelter, located next to the pioneer village parking lot.

The interactive gathering is open to families, children, and anyone interested in learning about amateur radio communication. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore radio technologies, antenna setups, and transmitter hunting. The event will also feature free walking transmitter hunts, allowing participants to search for hidden ham radio transmitters.

Licensed Amateur Radio operators are invited to operate the club’s equipment, while non-licensed visitors will have the chance to help make live radio contacts. Organizers noted that radios will be operating across various frequency bands throughout the day.

While general club activities and educational demonstrations are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the live radio operations will continue running until 3 p.m. Visitors are also encouraged to enjoy the park’s other scheduled on-site activities celebrating the legacy of Gus Grissom.
