BLOOMINGTON – On July 9, 2026, at approximately 10:40 a.m., officers responded to a crash involving a 2005 Cadillac SRX sport utility vehicle and a large 2024 International box truck on the State Road 45/46 Bypass near the overpass of I-69. Upon the arrival of emergency medical personnel, it was determined that the driver of the SUV was deceased.
The westbound lanes of the State Road 45/46 Bypass were closed for several hours as the scene was investigated by the Crash Reconstruction Team from the Bloomington Police Department. Members of the Indiana State Police also assisted at the scene due to the crash involving a commercial vehicle.
Investigators determined that the large box truck had been westbound on the State Road 45/46 Bypass and the Cadillac SUV had been eastbound. According to a passenger in the truck, the Cadillac was waiting in the left-turn lane to go northbound on I-69. As the truck neared the intersection, the Cadillac suddenly turned directly into the path of the box truck, which resulted in the box truck colliding with the passenger side of the SUV. After impact, the truck and SUV went off the north side of the roadway and came to rest in a ditch.
The driver of the truck, a 46-year-old man from Orleans, did not show signs of impairment but was transported to a local hospital, where he willingly submitted to a blood draw for analysis.
This is standard procedure for drivers involved in a crash resulting in serious bodily injury or death. The driver of the Cadillac was identified as an 85-year-old man from Bloomington. His identity is not being released at this time until proper notification can be completed by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled and will occur in the coming days.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no further information is available for release at this time.
