WFIU brings ‘Jazz in July’ to Columbus with a free outdoor concert at Library Plaza

COLUMBUS Regional public radio station WFIU will celebrate summer, community, and American musical heritage on Friday, July 17, when it hosts its annual Jazz in July outdoor concert at the Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza.

The free, family-friendly event runs from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and features a live performance by the Visions Jazz Ensemble, an acclaimed Indiana group led by Indianapolis trumpeter and composer Sam Butler.

Celebrating America’s Musical Heritage

Hosted by WFIU Jazz Director and local radio host David Brent Johnson—voice of Night Lights and Just You & Me—the 90-minute evening performance will weave classical traditions, contemporary influences, and vibrant dynamic improvisation.

In recognition of the ongoing America 250 national semiquincentennial celebrations, the evening’s musical program will pay tribute to America’s rich cultural fabric through jazz-inspired selections rooted in the nation’s musical history.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet WFIU staff and volunteers, learn more about public radio programming in Southern Indiana, and pick up jazz-themed giveaways throughout the evening. Local food trucks will also be stationed on-site, offering a variety of food and beverage options for purchase.

Organizers have structured the event to ensure accessibility for all community members, featuring designated reserved seating areas, clear directional signage, and on-site event staff assistance.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and friends for a comfortable evening outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will move to the indoor facilities at the Columbus Commons.
